Like most Americans,
I was glued to the coverage of the war in Iraq. I'd like to believe
that I am patriotic, and I certainly support the troops who serve
our nation in the ultimate way, but the truth is, I watched mainly
to see explosions and precision-guided flaming death from above.
Although I am not
entirely in agreement with the administration with regards to
the reasoning behind attacking Iraq, I must admit that despots
like Saddam really do pose a threat and sooner or later, must
be dealt with. And as long as we've got all that hardware laying
around...
Troops in any army
are motivated to fight for many reasons- defense of home and family,
national pride or, our president's favorite reason, "fighting
evil". Soldiers in WWII knew they were fighting for a good
cause and they performed brilliantly- against an extremely competent
and technically advanced enemy.
